Overview of news on the timber market in Europe
Timber prices in Norway reached a historic high
In the first half of 2025, the Norwegian timber market experienced a real boom: timber prices reached their highest level in the last 10 years, which stimulated record harvesting volumes. The main driver of growth was spruce logs, which saw a particularly strong demand in the summer season, with prices exceeding the symbolic threshold of NOK 1000/m³ (≈87 EUR/m³). At the same time, export markets remain volatile, and domestic sawmills have stepped up purchases of raw materials and expanded production despite the overall slowdown in the construction sector. Significant investments in production capacity during the COVID-19 pandemic are now contributing to strong, although cautious, growth.
Estonian woodworking sector shifts focus to Western Europe as distant markets lose appeal
The results of this year’s Swedbank industry survey show a gradual recovery in the Estonian woodworking industry despite economic uncertainty and geopolitical risks. In 2025, companies in the industry plan to increase investments by 13%, production by 7%, and sales by 8%. A significant number of companies (more than 50%) show an active interest in entering new markets, including Germany, France, and the UK. At the same time, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Sweden, and the Netherlands remain the key markets that have already been developed.
Trump’s tariffs apply to Finland’s lumber mills - Vietnam’s market stops as exports from other countries recover
Finnish sawmills have begun a gradual recovery from last year’s downturn: over the past 12 months, they have produced about 11 million cubic meters of coniferous lumber, of which only 2 million cubic meters remained on the domestic market, the rest was exported.
However, the positive dynamics are again under threat: new US duties on products from Vietnam have abruptly suspended an important export chain, as northern wood furniture was often made there for sale on the US market. In February, average export prices amounted to 250 EUR/m³ for spruce and 234 EUR/m³ for pine.
